DNA Replication

DNA polymerases catalyze the synthesis of DNA in the 5' to 3' direction. On the leading strand, this synthesis can happen continuously as helicase unzips the DNA. However, on the lagging strand, the direction of synthesis is flipped since DNA strands are antiparallel to one another. Thus, synthesis on the lagging strand is discontinuous and produces what are known as Okazaki fragments.
